Documenting Clouds
Ann Shenfield
Even though it's overcast
I spend my day taking photos of clouds
while I know it's been done before
and that this suggests a failure
of imagination on my part
I can't help thinking of each cloud as unique
as I'm re-documenting the heavens
I shift focus, to consider the image of a suited man
carried away by a flock of birds
or that scientist who was speaking
about intelligence, attempting
to define it, outside human terms
he was talking about how birds can find
their way across continents, though people
often can't work out, where on earth they are
I'd like to better understand the non-human
but the fact is, I barely grasp our species
with only these thoughts to masquerade as clouds
